Shore Health System’s Requard Center for Acute Rehabilitation was recently awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for a three-year period. CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of rehabilitation services provided in hospitals and nursing homes.

Confessions from a former fat girl

by Dr. Amber Golshani

As many of you know, I am 4 months pregnant with my second child. Ten years ago I was told I may not have the ability to conceive at all.

At age 22, I weighed close to 180 pounds. At 5’6”, that put me on the borderline of obesity according to Body Mass Index (or BMI, Click here [http://weightlossforlife.info/bmi.php] to calculate yours). At this time, I was not worried about conceiving, but the other problems I had with my hormones, plagued me. I had extremely painful and irregular periods, sometimes only four per year. I was always hungry, craved sweets and breads, chips, and baked goods. I was always irritable and if I missed a meal, you had better watch out. I had high cholesterol and triglycerides. I was eventually diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and told that the ‘cure’ was to go on birth control pills for the rest of my life; that I am at high risk for high blood pressure and diabetes; and if I ever wanted to get pregnant I would probably need fertility treatment, as most women with PCOS, are infertile.

Natural Options for Allergies for Children and Adults

by Dr. Amber Golshani

Sniffles, Sneezing, Itchy eyes-Oh my!
Sounds like allergy season is here again! In children who are susceptible, or predisposed to allergies, this can be a miserable time—for the parents too! Did you know more than two million school days are lost because of allergy symptoms? Even when kids are able to go to school, they may be significantly impaired; they may be limited in physical activities and may be unable to concentrate because of the annoyance of their symptoms. This may led to a lack of self esteem. Most parents struggle with wanting their kids to feel well versus giving their kids harmful drugs which are conventional medicines only options. Some struggle with this issue themselves; often having to choose between their symptoms or the side effects from the drugs used to treat those symptoms.

Allergies typically manifest in children between the ages of three and seven. Children with a history of atopic, or skin diseases such as eczema as an infant are more likely to develop seasonal allergies than children who have not. They are also more likely to develop asthma as the get older. Eczema, allergies and asthma are a classic triad.

What does the healing power of nature mean to you? Maybe your first thoughts are of the utilization of herbs, plants, vitamins and minerals to improve health. Did you ever consider that you are a part of nature? That a healing ability resides within you?

The healing power of nature is the inherent self-organizing and healing process of all living systems which establishes, maintains, and restores health. You have experienced this on a daily basis. Cuts, scrapes, bruises, recovery from surgery, and even the mending of broken bones is the work of your self-healing process. These are visible examples of a process which is always at work, even when we aren't aware of it.

Taking your life to.. .Another Level!

by Aaron Hutt
I want to start by expanding your thoughts about What Is Fitness. When we think of the definition of fitness many of us think of distance runners or bikers as the fitness people on earth, but the what definition for fitness is used?

The term fitness is hard to define and thus is used by many, including us to validate their particular training style. The closest we can get, and the one we use is the ability to adapt to life’s needs. So if you’re only need is to run 26.5 miles from the police then yes being a marathoner is for you! If you only need to stop trains, then power lifting is for you. You get the idea. While being very good at one area… it doesn’t guarantee greatness in another and excludes many of us fro enjoying even a taste of success due to some natural constraints.

I have come along a group of physical skills that can be the foundation of a fun, and effective start into total fitness, and I promise not to be too technical:

Cardiovascular/Respitory endurance- the ability of the bodies systems to process, gather and deliver oxygen

Stamina- The body’s ability to process, store, and use energy

Strength- The body’s ability to recruit muscles to exert force

Flexibility- The ability to maximize range of motion of a given joint
